Consider John 17:1-5. Here we see pointers to the reality that God’s ultimate aim in the created universe—and in the life of Christ—is to glorify God. The Father is to glorify the Son and the Son is to glorify the Father. This is not a man centered vision of the world. How does the world distort this God-centered vision of the world? How can you distort this God-centered vision of the world in your daily life? How can the church be guilty of distorting this God-centered vision of the world?
Consider John 17:6-26 in light of John 17:1-5. How does the rest of John 17 show that God’s glory and the joy and the good of God’s redeemed people are not at odds? Do you ever feel like God’s glory in your life works against your good and joy? Why?
Consider John 17:17-19. Do you desire to grow in your sanctification? In what ways? In this prayer, how does Jesus say that we are sanctified? What are the implications of this for our lives?
Consider John 17:23. What does it mean that the Father loves us who are in Christ, even as he loved Christ? What are the practical implications of this for your daily life? (also consider John 17:26)
