Discussion Questions

  1. Read John 16:16-16:33. What is the main point of this passage of Scripture?

  2. Consider John 16:33. What are some of the troubles that we face as Christians in this world? What are some of the troubles that you in particular face as a Christ follower in this world?

  3. Consider John 16:18, 29-32. The disciples experienced considerable confusion over God’s plan in Christ Jesus. Have you ever experienced confusion or lack of understanding as a Christian? If you can, give a specific example.

  4. Consider John 16:20b-22, 33. What does Jesus mean that he will “overcome the world” in specific regard to the trial that the disciples will soon face? How does the disciples’ sorrow turn into joy by the end of the book of John? Does this have relevance for us today? If so, how?

  5. Consider John 16:26-27. Jesus tells his disciples that after his death and resurrection they will be able to go directly to the Father who loves us, and Jesus will not need to go to ask the Father on their behalf.
