The Holy Spirit has come to us as a result of Christ’s work and for Christ’s glory

Main Points:

  2. The Spirit Exposes the World (vv. 16:8-11)

  3. The Spirit Brings Christ (vv. 12-15)

Discussion Questions

  1. Read John 16:4b-16:15. What is the main point of this passage of Scripture?

  2. Consider 16:4b. Jesus didn’t previously tell the disciples about persecution from the world (i.e. “these things,” see 15:20 and 16:2) because he “was with them.” His presence largely protected them as he absorbed opposition from the world himself, deflecting it away from the disciples. What does this teach us about the kind of shepherd Jesus is? How does this shape the way you relate to God?

  3. Consider 16:7. Have you ever thought how wonderful it would be to be one of the disciples, with Christ in his earthly ministry? How does Jesus challenge that thinking and insist that it is better to be alive now, after his death, burial, resurrection, and ascension? How should having right thoughts/feelings on this point affect our daily life with God?

  4. Consider 16:8-11. How do you see the Spirit of God exposing the sin, righteousness, and judgment of the world? Consider sin, righteousness, and judgment each in turn.

  5. Consider 16:12-15. The role of the Spirit is to glorify Christ by making him known. What comfort does this give you in your life with God? Why? What comfort does this give you in your evangelistic witness? Why?

  6. How is God calling you to respond to this message from John 16:4b-16:15?
