Read 2 Timothy 4:9-22. What do you think is the main point of this passage?
One theme in this passage is that Paul is experiencing the absence of friends and ministry partners at the end of his life. What are the different reasons for people leaving Paul as seen in this passage? Have you experienced absences, abandonment, and departures? How do you cope with the pain from those?
Has past relational pain in the church ever caused you to back away from investing in relationships in the church? Why or why not?
Why do you think it is God’s design that we continue to lean on each other for help in the church? What is God accomplishing through that, even though we will sometimes fail each other?
Consider vv. 16-17 in light of Psalm 22 (see especially Psalm 22:1 and 21). Why do you think Paul makes an allusion to Psalm 22 here? How can we see the gospel revealed in this passage?
Pastor Jeff said that we can take relational risks and look to imperfect people for help, because God will never leave us. How does God’s faithfulness strengthen us to rely on people that are not always faithful?
