Discussion Questions

  1. Read 2 Timothy 2:20-26. What do you think is the main point of this passage?

  2. Consider vv. 20-21. Paul’s illustration shows us that some people will be very useful for God’s redemptive purposes in the church, and others will lead lives of far less usefulness. How important to you personally is it to live a life of usefulness as an honored vessel of God? What other ambitions in your life have the potential of crowding out that godly ambition? Explain.

  3. Consider v. 22. Paul saw that there were youthful passions that had the potential to inhibit Timothy’s pursuit of “righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” What are some youthful passions among Christians today that need to be fled in order to pursue these godly things? Perhaps you can share about a particular youthful passion that you know the Lord is calling you to flee and ask for prayer from the group.

  4. Consider vv. 23-26. In all honesty, do you agree with Paul’s instruction here? Explain.

  5. Do you believe Paul’s instruction to Timothy holds out any relevance to us today? If so, what are some “foolish, ignorant controversies” that “breed quarrels” that we should “have nothing to do with”?

  6. How is God calling you to respond to this message on 2 Timothy 2:20-26?
