Discussion Questions

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 11:2-16. What do you think is the main point of this passage?

  3. Consider vv. 2-3. “The head of Christ is God.” This shows us that headship is not about inferiority or subjugation. How do you think of headship? Do you think our culture thinks about male headship as implying female inferiority? How do we combat this narrative and this way of thinking?

  4. Do you agree that the idea of human authority or order has been widely challenged in our culture? In what ways do you see this manifest? Why do you think this is?

  5. Consider v. 4. Male head coverings in pagan worship implied shame. Have you ever been ashamed or embarrassed of your association with the church? Why or why not?

  6. Consider v. 5. Female head coverings showed chastity and submission in ancient Rome. What symbolizes chastity and submission today? Has anything replaced the head covering?

  7. What ways does our culture blur the distinction between maleness and femaleness? How can we continue to uphold and celebrate this distinction? How can we uphold and celebrate God’s order in the home?

  8. Think of all the ways that Christ honored his head, God the Father. Lift up prayers of praise and thanksgiving for Christ’s honoring of God.
