Discussion Questions

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-11:1. What do you think is the main point of this passage?

  2. Consider vv. 9:24-27. How do you feel about Paul comparing living the Christian life to running a race or fighting in a boxing match, so as to win? Do you often conceive of your spiritual life this way? Why or why not?

  3. Consider vv. 10:1-14. Summarize the warning of these verses in your own words. How is God calling you to respond to this warning? Be as specific as you can be in answering this question.

  4. Consider vv. 10:11. Paul says that the events of Israel’s wilderness wanderings and the record of them in Scripture is all for us. What does this tell us about the Old Testament? What is potential cost of neglecting the instruction in the Old Testament? What is the significance of this for our private and family Bible reading?

  5. Consider vv. 10:16-17. Who are the two people we participate in / have fellowship with when we take the Lord’s Supper? How are each of these aspects of the Lord’s Supper significant to you personally?

  6. Consider vv. 10:18-31. There seems to be a difference to Paul in eating meat that was killed on an altar outside of a temple as ordinary meat, and eating in celebration of a pagan deity. What are some of the ways we can live in the world and enjoying all things as from God (vv. 10:25-26). And what are some of the ways that we can participate in the world celebrating worldly things along with world sinfully (vv. 10:20-22)? How can we know the difference?
