1 Corinthians 7:17-24

God has called you not to a new life station nor circumstance, but to himself.

In your salvation, God has called you…

  1. …not to a new ethnic identity (vv. 17-19)

  2. …not to a new vocation (vv. 20-23)

  3. …to himself (v. 24)

Discussion Questions

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 7:17-24. What do you think is the main point of this passage?

  2. Consider pastor Jeff’s introduction (i.e. him changing his name and choosing to wear the same shirt everyday early in his Christian life). When you first became a Christian— or at other times in your Christian life— have you unnecessarily changed things in your life out of a misunderstanding of what God had called you to? If so, tell the story of how that happened.

  3. Consider 1 Corinthians 7:17. What situation in your life right now would you be most tempted to think is not ‘the life that the Lord has assigned to you and to which God has called you,’ and therefore inhibiting your obedience to Christ?

  4. What are some difficult life situations that people can find themselves in when they come to Christ? What are some situations that people might hope would change when they come to Christ, but that God does not promise will change in this life?

  5. Consider 1 Corinthians 7:17-19. Have you ever felt like you should have been born into a different family, time, or place? I.e. ‘I should have been born 150 years ago,’ or, ‘I don’t really fit with my family,’ or ‘I wish I was born into the traditions of that culture/people’? Even more to the point, have you ever admired messianic judaism and wished you were born into a Jewish home following Jewish traditions before coming to Christ? How does this passage speak to those thoughts?

  6. How is God calling you to respond to this message on 1 Corinthians 7:17-24?
