Read 1 Corinthians 1:1-9. What do you think is the main point of this passage?
Have you noticed Paul’s frequent use of “grace” in the introductions and conclusions of his letters? Do a quick survey of Paul’s 13 letters to take note of the use of “grace” in the intros and conclusion. Have you thought about the significance of this in the past? What do you think the significance is?
What are some of the big problems we will see that the Corinthian church has by reading 1 Corinthians? How does Paul’s greeting in 1:1-9 settle on you in light of these problems?
Paul notes in v. 2 that the Corinthian Christians share together in a holy calling with every other Christian. Why do you think he does this? How is your spiritual unity with every other true believer significant for your life in the church? What are the practical implications of this?
Consider vv. 8-9. What is the reason for Paul’s hope for the Corinthian Church? How does this make you hopeful for Sellwood Church? What situations in your life or in the church have you ‘lost hope’ over? How do vv. 8-9 speak to those situations?
Are you ever concerned that you might fall away or fail to persevere in the faith? How does vv. 8-9 speak to this concern and fear?
How is God calling you to respond to this message?
