Discussion Questions
Read Mark 5:21-43. What do you think is God's overarching message to us in this passage of Scripture?
Mark 4 ends with this question: "Who then is this, [Jesus], that even the wind and sea obey him?" If your neighbor asked you today, "Who is Jesus?", what would you tell him or her? What are some other truthful ways we can answer the question, "Who is Jesus?"
What are some of the differences between the Gerasene Demoniac (Mark 5:1-20), Jairus (5:21-24), the woman with the issue of blood (5:25-34), and Jairus's daughter? What do they have in common? How do these differences and commonalities tell us more about who Jesus is?
Have you ever felt like you aren't a 'normal Christian' or that you are different than other people in the church? How does the ministry of Christ in Mark 5 speak to this feeling?
Consider Mark 5:27. The woman heard reports about Jesus, and in her moment of need went to him in desperation. Who are some people in your life that you should 'report about Jesus' to so that they would know they could go to him in their moment of need? Spend some time praying for them now.
Consider Mark 5:35. Does it seem to you like the needs of people in this passage (and this verse in particular) are in competition with one another? How so? Have you ever felt like the needs of others have taken priority over your needs at home? In the church? At work?
How does Jesus' authority over death in Mark 5:35-43 also show his ability to meet the deepest needs of all people? How does this minister to you?
How is God calling you to respond to this message on Mark 5:21-43?
