Sermon Discussion Questions

1. Read Acts 17:16 - 17:33. What is the main point of this passage of Scripture?

2. Have you struggled with the question of the knowability of God? Do you know others who have felt, “How can we really know if there is a God and who he is?” Explain.

3. How do you think the resurrection of Jesus speaks to this struggle? How is Christianity different than worldly philosophies or theories?

4. Paul’s spirit was ‘provoked’ by the idolatry he saw in Athens. What is your response to the worldliness and idolatry you see in Portland? Is it easy for you to ignore? Does it draw out your love and compassion to people who are lost? Does it make you angry?

6. Pastor Jeff brought up 3 different ways/styles of ministry: isolationist/separationist ministry, antagonistic/confrontational ministry, and incarnation ministry. Describe the merits of each. Which kind of ministry do you do most often? Which kind of ministry do you seek to embody? How will you move forward in this kind of ministry, practically? What are the next steps for you?

7. Read vv. 32-34. There were three responses to the preaching of Christ. Which response best describes where you are at? Do you know people in all three of these categories? Explain.

8. How is God calling you to respond to this message from Acts 17:15 - 17:33?
