Discussion Questions

  1. Read Mark 2:18-22 and review the sermon. What was the main argument and the supporting points of the sermon?

  2. Consider the reason that Jesus gives for why his disciples don't fast. What does it mean that he is the bridegroom (see Hosea 2)? What was the purpose of fasting? So why does Jesus' ministry and presence make fasting inappropriate for his followers?

  3. Read Zechariah 8. What is God's promise to Israel regarding the four fasts that were established in the exile? How does Jesus fulfill this promise in Mark 2?

  4. If Jesus has established his new covenant of grace, why do Christians presently fast? How does this differ from the reason why Jews fasted under the old covenant? Will we always fast?

  5. What are some ways that you can incorporate the practice of fasting into your life?

  6. Consider the two parables that Jesus gives in vv. 21-22. Why are the traditions and structures of Judaism inadequate to support his ministry? Reflect on Hebrews 8. How should this knowledge impact the traditions and structures that we establish now?

  7. How can other people in the church pray for you and help you in your resolve to respond to God’s word? Are there practical ways others can help you? Explain.
