  1. Read Luke 1:1-25. What is the main point of this passage of Scripture?

  2. Why do you think there ought to be joy, gladness, and rejoicing at the birth of John the Baptist? (see 1:16-17)

  3. How is the ministry of John the Baptist a more hopeful and powerful ministry than the ministry of the Old Testament prophets? (compare with Isaiah 6:8-13) What makes John the Baptist’s ministry unique?

  4. How does a person’s relationship with God in repentance (v. 16) affect their relationship with other people (v. 17)?

  5. How does Zechariah’s response in 1:18-20 represent Israel? Have you ever doubted God or struggled to believe his promises? Explain.

  6. How does 1:21-25 show the faithfulness of God despite the doubts of God’s people? How does this transform the nature of our trust/belief? Why is it counterproductive to focus on our trust/belief/faith?

  7. How can we have joy and gladness this advent season amidst the difficulties we are enduring at this time? (v. 14)
