Advent (Part III)

Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. Read Luke 1:57-80. What is the main point of this passage of Scripture?

  2. Consider the rejoicing (v. 58), the wonder (v. 63), and the awe (v. 65) being experienced in this passage of Scripture. What produced the joy, wonder and awe? Do you see your life marked by joy, wonder and awe? Why or why not?

  3. Read Luke 1:20. When does Gabriel say that Zechariah would be relieved of his muteness? Even after John was born, Zechariah was still mute, but still carried on with obedience to God. Do you think this was challenging? Why or why not? How does this relate to your life or experience?

  4. What would you describe was the purpose of Zechariah, Elizabeth and John the Baptist’s life? What is their story and how does that relate to your story?

  5. Pastor Jeff ended the sermon by saying, “The challenge for us today is to place ourselves inside the narrative of God’s salvation, such that we own the rejoicing of Elizabeth’s neighbors at the birth of John, and we own the fear and wonder at the prophecy of Zechariah in the unfolding of God’s plan, and we own the praise of God for fulfilling his covenant promises.” How do we do that, practically speaking?

  6. Pastor jeff said, “happiness cannot be pursued as a thing in itself, as an object to behold.” What do you think he means by that? Can we find fulfillment in daily life? How?

  7. How is God calling you to respond to this message from Luke 1:57-80?
