Acts 21:17-36

We are called to love the church, and sometimes at great personal cost.

Main Points: Love…

1.      For the God of the Gospel (Acts 21:17-19)

2.      For the Church’s Unity (Acts 21:20-26)

3.      Maligned (Acts 21:27-36)

Sermon Discussion Questions

1.      Read Acts 21:17 - 21:36. What is the main point of this passage of Scripture?

2.      Consider Acts 21:17-19. Paul loved to boast about the work of God in saving sinners. The Psalms are filled with the Psalmist recounting the work of God, and exhorting the reader to “Say to God, “How awesome are your deed!” How can we incorporate this kind of rejoicing in the work of God more in our lives as a regular practice?

3.      Consider Acts 21:20-26 and compare it to Romans 6:14, Galatians 3:24, Galatians 4:4-5, 1 Corinthians 7:19, and Galatians 6:15-16. Why does Paul capitulate to the request of the elders of the church in Jerusalem? What is at stake?

4.      Pastor Jeff explained that Paul was willing to bend over backwards for the church in Jerusalem in order to preserve the unity of the church. How important is the unity of Sellwood Church to you? What are some things you can do to serve the unity of the church?

5.      Consider Acts 21:27-36. In particular, notice the accusation in v. 28 that stirred up the crowd and lead to Paul’s beating. Why do you think that accusation would be particularly hurtful at that moment? Have you ever been falsely accused? Has your love ever been misunderstood or gone unnoticed? If so, explain. How hurtful was that?

6.      Consider Psalm 139:16, part of our memory passage. God knew you, loved you, and gave his son for you before you were even born. Do you feel you have grasped this reality? Why or why not? How does grasping the love of God for us in this way help us to love others?

7.      How is God calling you to respond to this message from Acts 21:17 - 21:36?
